I attended commander Shea School but did a summer school stint at Saint Cecilia.
I still have dream of walking the hallways in both schools. My child hood memories
Of this experience are ever lasting. I believe I graduated some time in 1970 and continue
At UCLA. UCLA “aka” University on the corner of Lennox Avenue. RICE high School
Where the BLACK STRAP was KING. The memories of Pain at still there but.
Here the Christian Brothers of Ireland were teaching. This was a puzzling group
They were brutal most were ex combat vets that served in WWII and had there lives saved by GOD in that engagement. I truly believe that I was blessed and thank the Lord
For having this experience as part of my life. I left El Barrio in 1996 {Spanish Harlem}
Mover to several places altma springs Florida, Atlanta Georgia, Dallas Texas back to Atlanta and still dream of coming back to my roots.

Hola.
I thought I had posted on this site before.but I guess not.
It has been a 'trip' down memory lane, for sure, in reading all these postings.and feeling the warmth and love of having been a part of something that is still so dear to everyone.
St.Cecilia's was a great place.
I always remember the feast of St Cecilia on 11/22 no matter where I am.it was also the same day we lost JFK.
My parents still live in the neighborhood but moved from 104th and 2nd to 92nd and York.
I remember Srs.Kevin, Noelle, Veronica, and Ignatius, Mrs. Marciano and Mrs. Hernandez.
Also Bros. Grogran, Somerville, Sorhaindo, and Fr. Whelan.
Thanks to some of your postings, I began to remember some others as well.I attended St Simon Stock HS in the Bronx and then BMCC, and then Hunter College.
There is a site on classmates, for adding one's name, for free, to the alumni list.
One can also network and plan reunions.it sure would be great.
As my parents still live nearby.and I visit NY often.
My brothers, Francisco Santos and Sigfredo Santos(aka Chicky) attended SCS as well.
and my cousin, Miguel Santos, attended Commander Shea.
I have always missed those good old days.

I enjoyed going down memory lane. I attended St. Cecilia from '59 to '68. One of my favorite teachers (nun) was Sister Mary Kevin. I was sad to hear the school no longer existed. I was hoping to see a gallery from that "era" for viewing. Let me know if any do exist.

I graduated 1955 from Commander Shea. What wonderful years, and staff Sister Veronica,Sister Kevin, Sister Chrysestum, Br Donahue, and Mahoney, Father Lavelle, and Scanlon. I had a great education and went on to St Patricks Cathedral. I moved to California in 1969. I am now a widow after 44 years, and 3 adult children and 5 grandchildren. I was last in New York 8 years ago visiting family and visited St Cecelia with my husband where we got married. I will be visiting in November and will be sure to stop in. I read all the e-mails and they brought back so many memories, thanks for this website.

This is the Church my beloved Mother first introduced me to Roman Catholic ways. Here I was batized , received my first comunion & confirmation. I shall never forget the wonderful moments spent at this Church. Masses then were in Latin (which I frankly favor over current practises), and we knelt much of the Mass' sessions. I am now 80 years old, and happy that St Cecilia entered my life. Thanks.

Hi, it's so nice that this site is kept up. I was in the last graduating class of 1973 at Commander Shea. Sr Patrick was our teacher; for the boys, Br. O'Connor, and Br. Shields was the principal. I played the guitar at the 10:00 mass in the early 70's at Shea and Fr Browne was the celebrant. Commander Shea, St. Cecilia's has always remained in my heart along with my classmates. If anyone is out there, I would love to hear what you're up to. Does anyone know the whereabouts of Fr. Skelly, or Fr. Browne, Sr. Christine, Sr. Seton, Mr.Scanlon; and my friends Augustina M, Blanca T, Sylvia G. and the rest of our class?

Greetings. I was delighted to read your website mentioning my beloved Uncle, Eddie Whalen, CSsR. I have many happy memories of visits to St. Cecilia's as a child. I majored in music and have served as a church music director/cantor for over 40 years now. I have often wondered if St. Cecelia didn't have something to do with that. So wonderful to see what a vibrant parish you continue to be.

I graduated from Commander Shea in 1961. I remember Brother Duffy and Brother Donahue who had been a magician in a previous life and always came into our classroom to do magic tricks and tell jokes. Sr. Mary Timothy taught me for several years, and Sr. Mary Laboure was principal when I graduated. I also remember Mr. Woodrow, the music teacher, Mrs. Lebron and Mrs. Maduro. Jose was the custodian there. I have wonderful memories of Shea, and I too was sad to find out it had closed. One thing I know for sure: those nuns taught me well! I would love to hear from other classmates.

I love this website. I am trying to contact anyone from the class of 1967. I am especially interested in some faculty members such as Brother Crogan , My eighth grade teacher and Mr. Aritari, my hero and inspiration for learning words. His exploits in the army still resonate with me. I believe he was a pilot.
I loved the teaching style he had with the SRA kits. I did a lot of learning with those stories.
I am also looking for anyone with knowlede of the Commander Shea song. I sing to my daughters but i never complete it because the words escape me. Feel free to write me if you know the words. I would like to sing the whole thing to them.

This is a fabulous website, now all we need to do is get Commander Shea school back.

Hello. My father and his siblings all attended Saint Cecilia's between 1900-1923. I believe my grandparents were married there. As a Californian, I'm not familiar with the streets, but they lived on East 106th, so I assume this would have been the logical parish to get married in. Can anyone help? Patrick S. I graduated from Commander Shea School in 1966 and from there went to Cardinal Spellman H.S. in the Bronx. I remember my years in St. Cecilia's parish as a wonderful time. My entire family went to Commander Shea or St. Cecilia's. I would love to hear from others from those years - 1958 to 1966. The school and the parish gave us a great foundation for life. I attended St. Cecilia's from 3rd to 8th grade. I was a Daughter of Mary, worked in the Summer camp program and in the parish office. I left NYC and went to college in upstate NY. I met my husband there and now live in Michigan with our three children. I completed my Masters in Michigan. I remember fondly all the people of the parish including Nelly, her son Jubencio, Fr. Skelly, Br. Sam and I know in my heart without these people I never would have been the person I am now. It was the love and guidance that helped me to be as successful as I am now and to continue to have a strong faith.

I just happened to find my Cmdr. J.J.Shea graduation program from 1956. In going over it the names of other students brought images of their faces to me. I started 1st grade with Sister Mary Kevin. I cannot remember the name of the sister whom I had in 2nd grade. I do remember the epithet we had for her but I won't repeat it here as I'm sure she's in the great beyond. Sister Mary Chrysestum was my 3rd grade teacher and Miss Murray my forth grade teacher, who could not pronounce Juan and named me John which I've used ever since. I remember Br.Donohue, who was always telling jokes tell a joke in our 4th grade class and Miss Murray laughed so hard her wig fell off. I had Br. Mahoney in 5th grade and also in 6th. Br. Duffy in 7th grade and Br. Donohue in 8th. I then went on to Rice HS from where I graduated in 1960. I do walk around 'el barrio' often and am saddened each time I go by 'Shea' last time I looked it was a Baptist Church. Great memories from those days. My older sister graduated from Shea in 1952, Teresa Acevedo. Today I can really appreciate the architectural beauty of St. Cecelia's Church. The brickwork is awesome.

My mother was born in New York City in 1927 and was baptised in St Cecilia's. A polio victim when aged 10 she was taken to Ireland by her parents and subsequently, after many years in England, ended up in Australia. We visited St Cecilia's a couple of years ago and found the people of the Parish to be helpful as were the staff in the office who assisted my Mother in the finding her Baptismal Certificate and the address at which she lived so many years ago. May God bless you all.

I was hoping someone could provide contact information for Brother Mueller. He taught 8th grade at St Cecilia in the mid to late 80's. He made such a difference in my life and has been in my thoughts. I was hoping I could thank him and let him know how thankful I am to have known him. He believed in me when no one else would. Thanks so much for this website. I have such great memories of Saint Cecilia's. I made my first communion (by Father O'Brien), comfirmation and was married there. My son was baptized there too. Mariage performed by Father Skelly and my son's baptistm also-I have a great photo of Father Skelly in his youth then). It is so great to know that he is still there.

My parents both had their funeral services in Saint Cecilia's also. Of course the priest that did mass for my dad in 1981 was Father Skelly.
